Year 9 Spanish: Celebrating Mexican Culture Through Dance and History
Last week, our Year 9 Spanish pupils enjoyed an exciting and immersive cultural learning experience that brought Mexican traditions to life in the classroom. Pupils were given the opportunity to learn about Cinco de Mayo, an important celebration for a Spanish speaking country.
Learning About Cinco de Mayo
Pupils explored the history and significance of cinco de mayo, discovering the origins of this important celebration in Mexican culture. This provided valuable context for understanding contemporary Mexican society and helped develop their cultural awareness alongside their language skills. Pupils learnt a little more about the Mexican culture, including identifying the country flag and the sort of food eaten during the celebration.
The Mexican Hat Dance
The highlight of the week was learning and performing the Mexican hat dance (el jarabe tapatío) in class.
Why not try giving the Mexican Hat Dance a go yourself? Check out the video we watched here.
Thank you to Mrs Bell for a fun lesson, and well done to all our Year 9 Spanish pupils for embracing this cultural learning opportunity with enthusiasm and energy!
