Robots, AI and Real-World Careers: Pupils Meet the Future of Work

Year 8 pupils were visited by Dr. Helen Bennett, Director of Scientific Strategy for Peak Analysis and Automation. Dr Bennett was interviewed by Mr Wickins about her career journey, what it is like working in a traditionally male-dominated area of STEM, the challenges she faced along the way, and how opportunities for women in science and engineering are changing. Read the article below from Mr Wickins (www.rundontwalk.co.uk) to find out more:

‍

"What does the future of work actually look like?

That was the question behind a brilliant visit I helped organise at The King’s School, Fair Oak, where we welcomed Dr Helen V Bennett, Director of Scientific Strategy at Peak Analysis and Automation (PAA).

‍

Helen works at the intersection of science, robotics, automation and AI, so rather than simply talking about future careers, our pupils got to hear directly from someone working in this world right now.

‍

I interviewed Helen about her career journey, what it is like working in a traditionally male-dominated area of STEM, the challenges she faced along the way, and how opportunities for women in science and engineering are changing.

‍

We also explored some big questions around AI and the future of work:

  • How is AI already changing scientific research and automation?
  • How should we use AI to enhance our thinking rather than replace it?
  • Why is checking and questioning AI output so important?
  • What jobs might change as automation develops?
  • What skills and attitudes will young people need for careers that don't even exist yet?

‍

And then came the really interesting bit...

‍

The pupils took over.

‍

Their questions ranged from “What qualifications do you need?” and “How did you get into robotics?” to:

‍

“What happens if a robot malfunctions?”
“Who is to blame if a robot explodes?”
“Can robots make mistakes?”
“What are the dangers of programming robots?”
and, inevitably...

“Do you think AI will take over the world?”

‍

These conversations are exactly why I believe education needs to go beyond the curriculum.

‍

The pupils were then given an opportunity to create their own imaginative workflows using Peak Robotic's amazing robot arm; the KX2.

‍

‍

As educators, we have an opportunity to raise aspirations, challenge stereotypes and help young people see themselves in careers they may never have considered.

‍

For our girls in particular, meeting an accomplished woman working in robotics and scientific automation sends a much more powerful message than simply telling them “women can work in STEM.”

They can see it.

‍

And for me, this is a big part of what being a modern educator means: connecting curriculum, technology, people and opportunity — and creating experiences that make young people curious about what they could do next.

‍

An example of some of the work in class

‍

A huge thank you to Helen for giving our pupils her time, answering some seriously challenging questions and showing them where science, engineering, robotics and AI can lead. Also, a huge thank you to Caroline Santer and the team at The King's School for facilitating this visit!

‍

The future of technology isn't something our pupils are just learning about. It's something they're going to help shape.

"Anyone considering The King’s School for their children, will be making the best decision they have ever made for their academic, spiritual, emotional and social growth. Both my children attended the school and I have no doubt that the environment and staff played a key role in their development to encounter and thrive in the world."

Mrs Pole

"My son joined The King’s School in Year 2. The teachers, right from the start, identified his needs and made recommendations to assist him – provided us with guidance and support throughout, which made such a huge difference to my son who needed both behavioural and educational support"

Mrs Hamilton

"We've been part of The King’s School family for 7 years. We've seen our children grow in stature, maturity and their own personal faith. At no other school will you ever be given a prophetic word or verse of Scripture for your child! They're loved, cherished and valued by ALL the staff as if they were their own children."

Mrs Boxall

"The King’s School has been a huge blessing to us and our children. They love learning here, they love the teachers, they love the atmosphere. We’d recommend it to anyone."

Mr Hicks

"The King’s School's been an amazing experience for not only our children, but for our entire family. The school welcomed our family when we moved to the area, other parents and children were incredibly supportive and kind, and we instantly felt at home."

Mrs Shergill

"The King’s School is beautiful, inside and out! Every day our daughter learns so much more than just phonics and maths, she learns who she is and what she can do as an individual, and this school not only allows her to do this but encourages and supports her in every aspect."

Mrs Price

"The King's School is incredible. The staff are amazing and really care about & know all the children so well. Our girls have come on in leaps & bounds since joining. We love the atmosphere and the whole ethos. Couldn't imagine them being anywhere else now. "

Mrs Mullane

"Fantastic School. I have 1 in senior in his last year, and 2 in primary. The communication between staff and parents is very good. The kindness shown by staff throughout the primary school clearly inspires the pupils to emulate this towards each other. Highly Recommended."
