Celebrating World Book Day 2026
Thursday 5th March 2026
What a wonderful day we had celebrating World Book Day here at The King's School! Across the school, pupils and staff came together to share our love of reading and celebrate the magic of books.
Primary - Dress as a character
Pupils in primary classes R-6 were invited to come to school dressed as their favourite character from a book. The outfits this year were excellent; from biblical leaders to Mary Poppins, Gruffalos to Hungry Caterpillars and a person-sized version of Lottie Brooks – it was a delight to see them all. The sun was shining, so in the morning the whole of primary came together on the field outside Mrs Santer's office to show off their outfits.

In the afternoon, pupils enjoyed reading in class or outside in the sun.

Senior - Book Swaps and Speed Book Dating
Whilst some of our senior pupils were sad they had to come to school in their normal uniform, there were plenty of activities to celebrate reading in years 7-11.
A book swap took place by our senior library at breaktime. Pupils brought in books from home to share with their friends, give a book a new home and help others discover new stories.
During lesson 4, pupils took part in Speed Book Dating! The objective - to talk to other pupils about a chosen book, persuade them to read it and gather as many ‘tallies’ for your chosen book as you can. The books which gathered the most tallies have been pulled together to make our recommended book list!
Watch this space for our list of recommended books.
A special thank you to The English Department for organising and delivering these activities.
National Year of Reading 2026
Our commitment to reading doesn't stop here – we're dedicated to fostering a love of reading throughout the year.
We are taking part in the National Year of Reading 2026. World Book Day is just one of the ways we are getting involved with reading this year. We encourage all families to:
- Spend 10 minutes reading together each day
- Visit your local library to discover new books
- Talk about the stories you're reading and what you enjoy about them
- Share book recommendations with friends and family, or with your teacher! We would love to share your favourite Christian books with our school community
Thank You
A huge thank you to all our staff for their creativity and enthusiasm in making today so special, and to our families for supporting your children's costumes and love of reading.
