Pupils across the senior school took part in a Careers Day, organised by Assistant Headteacher, Mrs Langmead. Careers Day allows pupils to explore a wide range of professions and industries, helping them to understand the diversity of career paths available.
Pupils had a jam packed schedule of opportunities aimed at exploring different career options, gaining insights into the world of work. Activities included the chance to interact with professionals from different fields of work, participating in careers workshops and the opportunity to receive careers guidance from local specialists.
Years 7 - 10 took part in a variety of activities including online profiling, psychometric personality testing and specific job selection tasks. Year 11 had the opportunity to attend one to one careers guidance appointments with Ms Jules Gough, who visited us from neighbouring secondary school, Wyvern College. A careers focused assembly welcomed Hannah West, Careers Coordinator from Barton Peveril College.
“We are God’s creation. He created us to belong to Christ Jesus. Now we can do good works”, Ephesians 2:10
The day ended with hearing directly from a range of professionals, aimed at inspiring pupils to consider different career areas, requiring different qualifications and entry routes. Speakers discussed how their faith has impacted their career, allowing pupils to see how practising Christians have been able to live out their faith at work.
Major Matt Hall - Armed Forces
Major Matt Hall introduced a career in the Armed Forces, sharing his varied experiences gained in the army and the many countries he had visited. He explored the skills required for a role in the military, including a sense of adventure, fitness and determination. Speaking of his faith, Major Hall reflected on how Christians in the Armed Forces have the opportunity to share compassion with those they encounter, and how prayer can equip us when faced with challenging situations at work.
Dominique Ellis - Civil Engineering
Dominique Ellis gave an inspiring insight to engineering and her role as a Geotechnical Engineer, challenging pupils' perceptions of the field. She discussed the different ways to enter an engineering role, including through apprenticeship routes rather than traditional University degree routes. Dominique encouraged pupils to trust that God will guide them in their future choices and to always look for opportunities to spread the love and light of God in their chosen career paths.
Ashya Mackley - Occupational Therapist/Singer
Alongside her professional role as an Occupational Therapist, supporting the rehabilitation of people in the community, Ashya shared her experiences of using her God-given talent as a singer and worship leader. Without requiring formal professional qualifications, Ashya explored how singing has led her to meet people from all walks of life, often enabling her to share her faith through prayer. Ashya focused on the importance of understanding your God given gifts, encouraging pupils to lean into God to hear where He is leading them.
Dr Adam Hawley - Dentistry
The final speaker of the day was Dr Adam Hawley, who highlighted routes available to help people access a career in dentistry. He outlined the opportunities which currently exist if people want to expand dentistry into further specialisms such as orthodontics, periodontology and maxillofacial surgery. As well as this, he focused on other areas where skills in dentistry can be used, including ways to serve overseas missions and charities providing dental aid where it is needed most. Dr Hawley summarised how dentistry can be an opportunity to reflect God’s character through kindness and being a blessing to all nations.
We would like to extend our thanks to all the visiting speakers who helped make this day engaging, inspiring and beneficial for our pupils.
Pupils thoroughly enjoyed the day, many enjoying the chance to grab a toothpaste freebie. We look forward to seeing shiny teeth in school this week.
