A Day of Languages and Leadership in the Classroom
On Friday 26th September, our school enjoyed a variety of activities celebrating languages for European Languages Day. Led by Mrs Pancott and Mrs Bell, our pupils showcased their teaching skills, stepping up and sharing their language skills with their fellow pupils. During break and lunchtime, pupils enjoyed spotting the various teachers dressed up for the day’s celebrations. The atmosphere across the school was one of energy, curiosity, and joy.
Pupils in senior had the opportunity to become the language teacher, giving their peers a short lesson in the languages they speak. This included an engaging lesson in Ukrainian. Taking the role seriously, this young language leader guided classmates through greetings and simple phrases with enthusiasm and maturity. Another pupil introduced the class to Armenian. With patience and clarity, they helped everyone practise their pronunciation, leading the group through mini dialogues where pupils could greet each other, ask and answer names, and say goodbye in both Ukrainian and Armenian.

A third student proudly taught some Chinese. Delivering an excellent lesson, this pupil enjoyed the skills of correcting and perfecting the class’s pronunciation. In Year 10, another pupil amazed their peers by teaching Greek. The room fell silent as they wrote out the Greek alphabet on the board, and although the pronunciation challenged everyone, the group embraced the opportunity with enthusiasm.

The class also enjoyed a multilingual musical experience, singing Waymaker in Spanish and listening to The Splendour of the King in French. Alongside this, pupils had the chance to learn some introductory French and German.
Days like this remind us that speaking another language is a gift, and it was wonderful to see pupils celebrated for their linguistic abilities.
